An Earthbag School in Honduras.

www.thenewdoorproject.com

I love this project. Greg Pappas is from the USA. He's been working in Latin America for a while now, and currently based in Honduras where he plans to build an earthbag school for the local community. I'll let him do the rest of the talking.
There is no kindergarten class, so they rent the shell of an unfinished building.

This will be my third earthbag construction in Honduras since 2013. The project is to benefit an impoverished community in a rural part of Honduras where a single room schoolhouse with no bathrooms or kitchen serving over 100 children currently resides. Currently, there is no building for the kindergarten class, so they rent the shell of an unfinished building in town.

The project is called “The New Door Project” which is a school that I am building in Honduras. It is a 1065 sq. ft. facility that will meet the needs of a small community in Juticalpa, Honduras. A lion's share of our budget is in the construction of the school itself. It will have 2 large classrooms, a large kitchen with appliances and boys' and girls' bathrooms with installations. This project will be transformative for the community. All information can be found at: www.thenewdoorproject.com.

What do we need? First, we need financial contributions to make this a reality. We are also offering a workshop for anyone that would like to come down to help us with the project and would like to learn about earthbag building.

Alternatively, we have a website: www.thenewdoorproject.com where a number of items are for sale, from Honduran hot sauce to archival quality fine photography prints, to canvas bags, hats and coffee mugs too, that will go to benefit the project. 100% of the proceeds go towards the school.

Want to join this project?

If anyone would like to join the team in Honduras, the price would be $2,500 per person, which includes round-trip airfare from the USA, housing in a private villa (with air conditioning/running water, etc), all food and travel expenses.

Where is this happening Juticalpa, Olancho, Honduras

When is it happening? Given our financial goal, we hope to be able to begin construction in early 2018, preferably February-March. This would be during Honduras’ dry season, which is the best time of year to work with earthbags. If not, we may begin the summer of 2018. We need at least 75% of our goal to begin construction (~$26,000USD). We are currently at about 10% of our project goal.

More about Greg I am from Connecticut, USA, and have been working in Latin America since 2010. I lived in Honduras from 2012-2014 and Guatemala in 2015. I discovered earthbag building through a friend and have built a 14’ diameter dome and a 600 sq.ft. house in Honduras in the past few years using this technique. My focus is working to help people. It will begin with housing and eventually grow to include a permaculture model that is holistic and sustainable.
