The Mud Home
I built my little earthbag home back in 2011, and you can see exactly how we did that here. At the time I had very little money and even less experience. I had never so much as put a shelf up before I began this project! It turned out to be an adventure that radically changed my life, and I wrote that story in my most popular book, Mud Ball. I learned that I love building with mud. There's nothing quite like the dirt beneath our feet. It's a soft, sculptable and healthy material that is incredibly tough and durable once dried. Pictures can't convey the atmosphere of a mud home. They are warm, airy, and smell amazing. Because natural plasters are 'breathable' they allow moisture to evaporate fast mitigating mold and nasty odours. Living within mud walls is a completely different experience to a the airtight box of a mainstream home.
